When I lived in Gallatin from 1968 to 1973, Joe Snyder was the editor and publisher of the North Missourian. He was one of the most respected newsmen in the state and authored a fine book (I believe it was titled “County Seat Paper”) that should be read by anyone interested in Daviess County history. Joe also served his country with honor in time of war, in part to preserve the rights of Americans to express their opinions.

As I read the letters to the editor that take issue with his political opinions, it occurs to me that some are missing the point. Joe is now retired from editing and writing as an Op-Ed columnist. He is not serving as an unbiased journalist, and should not be viewed as such. His opinions are well thought out, well stated, and designed to make the reader think, as is the charge of the editorial writer.

Whether you agree with his opinions, or disagree, you should respect and applaud his ability to make his case. I hope when I am Joe’s age I can simply formulate opinions, much less clearly and thoughtfully articulate them.
