The Daviess County Health Department is pleased to announce that their local agency WIC application and contract for fiscal year 2005 has been approved by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to serve a monthly caseload of 273 eligible women, infants and children from Oct. 1, 2004, to Sept. 30, 2005.

The WIC program is a federally funded supplemental nutrition education program for women who are pregnant, breast-feeding, up to six months postpartum, infants, and children up to the age of five years. WIC provides the food they need when they need it most, including such supplemental foods as milk, cheese, eggs, tuna, carrots, iron-fortified cereals, fruit juices high in vitamin C, dried peas or beans or peanut butter, and iron-fortified infant formula.

The WIC program has been operational in Missouri since 1974. Approval of the local agency contract assures that the Daviess County WIC program will assist the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services in meeting the following objectives:

*Reducing the incidence of poor birth outcomes in pregnant women at nutritional risk.

*Encouraging use of appropriate infant feeding practices by families and other care givers.

*Decreasing the percent of WIC participants who are at risk for acute and chronic disease.

*Decreasing the percent of children who are overweight.

The State approved WIC contract in Daviess County will also contribute to the achievement of the following “Priority Results in Missourians”:

*Increased percentage of children prepared for kindergarten.

*Increased percentage of births resulting in healthy birth-weight babies.

*Decreased impact of chronic diseases.

The WIC clinics are held at the Daviess County Health Department at 609A South Main Street in Gallatin, Mo., on the fist Thursday and Friday of each month and the third Monday and Wednesday of each month from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please call 660-663-2414 for an appointment and for additional eligibility information which will be required at the time of certification.
