A long-missing notation in the Gallatin R-5 sports record book is missing no longer. Junior Whitney Boyd shot a 40 on the back nine on Tuesday, including a birdie on her final hole, to become the first Gallatin Lady Bulldog golfer to medal at a state tournament by finishing 15th in the individual competition of the 2004 MSHSAA Class 1 Girls Golf Championship.

“Whitney is a three-year state qualifier who has put in a lot of time on the course,” said GHS golf coach Chris Elbert. “Her game has improved each year and I was really proud of the effort she put together at the tournament,” he added.

Boyd’s round of 86 was among the top dozen scores in Tuesday’s competition on the par 72 Deer Lake Golf Course in Springfield, and it bumped her up to the medal ranks after a round of 93 and 27th place standing on Monday. Her two-day total of 179 was 28 strokes better than her score at last year’s state tournament.

Junior Maria Burge shot 92 on Monday and came back with a 94 on Tuesday to finish 30th among 122 individual golfers in the tournament, just seven strokes off the medal pace. She improved 21 strokes over her performance at last year’s state meet.

“She put together two solid rounds,” said her coach. “This was her second trip to state and a significant improvement from last year.”

Danielle Critten, who finished in 100th place after rounds of 108 and 117, will use this week’s competition as a building block for next season. “Danielle struggled, but she should benefit from the experience as a sophomore.”

“Every year I ask the girls to raise the bar and improve,” Coach Elbert commented. “Whitney’s finish at state is a great way to cap a year where the girls went 9-1 in meets and won the conference title for the fourth year in a row,” he added. “I am proud of all their efforts and hope we can take another step toward an even better season next year.”
