Superintendent Todd Willhite presented the North Daviess Board of Education information regarding the Adequate Yearly Progress Report (AYP) during their regular meeting held Monday, Sept. 13.
AYP is a specific annual goal for improving student achievement in communication arts and math. MAP test scores are used to determine if a school has met the goals for AYP.
As a district, North Daviess met AYP in math and communication arts. However, the high school did not meet AYP in math.
Superintendent Todd Willhite says he is nevertheless pleased with the AYP results for his school:
“We focused on communication arts and have seen significant improvement there. Now we’re making the same commitment to bring the math scores up.”
Mr. Willhite said the school is making a district wide effort to make sure the standards are met for next year. State proficiency goals jump from 10.3% in 2004 to 31.1% in mathematics in 2005.
By the year 2014 students are expected to be 100% proficient. While welcoming accountability and high standards, Mr. Willhite says the law forces an unrealistic expectation on all schools.
“We like high standards and high expectation, but expecting 100% of the students to be above average is impossible,” he said. “As we draw closer to 2014 more and more schools will not be able to meet the standards. We don’t want to lower the standards of education, but the initial AYP goals may be just too high.”
In other business at the Sept. 13 meeting, the financial statement was presented and bills were paid as presented.
The board/staff dinner was discussed.
Angie Baker has been employed as the school district nurse. She will be providing eight hours of service per week.
Bus routes were approved.
The board heard the results of safety and local bus inspections.
Several policies and regulations were adopted.
Program evaluations of each of the following was provided: transportation; ASBR; reading and retention; academic tutoring; and homeless, migrant and LEP.
During administrative reports, Ms. Kirby presented the school calendar of events and reported on enrollment figures. Mr. Willhite reported on communication arts and math MAP performance.
The board held executive session to discuss employee matters and for student items.
Next board meeting was set for 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the high school.
Present at the regular meeting of the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education were David Iddings, Donald Baker, Beverly Hunter, Debbie Ray, Chris Nelson and P.J. Burnett. Gene Morris was absent. Also present were Superintendent Todd Willhite, Board Secretary Beverly Hunter, Julie Kirby and Charlotte Claussen.
