Nine men were indicted by a federal grand jury Sept. 10, in separate and unrelated cases, for illegally possessing firearms, according to Todd P. Graves, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri.
Cody J. Gilreath, 26, of Gallatin, was among the men indicted by a federal grand jury in Kansas City for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The federal indictment alleges that Gilreath was in possession of a Savage bolt-action rifle on Aug. 16, 2004. Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition. Gilreath has two 1998 criminal felony convictions for tampering and property damage.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David A. Barnes. It was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The indictments are part of Project Ceasefire, the district’s ongoing anti-crime initiative.
Project Ceasefire, launched in October 1999, is a cooperative initiative by federal and local law enforcement and the Kansas City Crime Commission that targets for federal prosecution persons who unlawfully use or possess firearms.
