The Daviess County Chautauqua is slated to unfold Friday, Saturday and Sunday – Sept. 17-19, on the business square in Gallatin. This 19th annual festival offers entertainment largely free of charge on an outdoor stage and under courtyard tents.

This Chautauqua will be marked by the dedication of the Veterans’ Walk of Honor in a program slated for 4:45 p.m., immediately following the 4 p.m. Chautauqua parade. The county’s Civil War cannon on its new carriage will be unveiled with comments and recognitions as part of the program. Jonathan Arnold, project coordinator who initiated the effort as a Boy Scout Eagle project, will emcee the ceremonies.

Headlining Saturday’s musical entertainment will be The Krazy Kats, a trio returning to perform a variety of popular music beginning at 7:45 p.m. Their act will be preceded by the Elsea Smith Blues Band, performing at 5:30 p.m., and a performance by Dance Essentials at 7:30 p.m.

Chautauqua Saturday’s daytime activities begin with games and booths on the square at 9 a.m. Muzzleloader and Civil War exhibits will be displayed at the courthouse. South American music will be performed by “Alpaca” along with songs by local vocalists from noon to 3:30 p.m. under the tent on the south side of the square.

Gallatin Theatre League offers three performances of “Our ‘70s Show” in Courter Theater at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and at 2:30 p.m.

Registration for the Chautauqua Baby Show is at 8:30 a.m. on the main stage on the north side of the square. The baby show, sponsored by the Gallatin FCCLA chapter, begins at 9 a.m. (call 663-2172 or 663-2838 for more information). A talent show coordinated by Barbara Wilson (663-3469) is slated for 11 a.m. Dance routines by Dance Essentials at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. will be followed by a performance by Stage Crew at 3 p.m. before the Chautauqua parade at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Music dominates Friday evening events with gospel music performed at 6:30 p.m. followed by “The Girlfriends” at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday’s schedule is also familiar with the flea market — rain or shine — conducted around the square. A pancake breakfast is offered from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the Gallatin Fire Protection District station, tours at the Squirrel Cage Jail are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and two matinee performances of “Our ‘70s Show” are offered at 1:30 and 3 p.m. by the Theatre League at Courter Theater. The annual Chautauqua Ranch Rodeo begins at 1 p.m. at Dockery Park (for information, call 663-3084).

The Chautauqua is organized by the Daviess County Fine Arts Council. Admission is charged only for Theatre League shows. Concessions are offered by Gallatin Men’s Club. In case of rain, all possible activities will be held at the Gallatin R-5 High School. For more information, call 663-2154.
