The Davies County Sheriff’s Department participated in the I-35 enforcement, Click It or Ticket Campaign, to increase safety belt and child restraint use. Law enforcement agencies all along I-35, from Canada to Texas stepped up their traffic enforcement activities to make roadways safer for drivers and passengers. Funding for this effort was provided through a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), Office of Highway Safety in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Missouri Safety Center at Central Missouri State University.

During the Click It or Ticket Campaign, law enforcement officers issued 35 safety belt tickets, one child restrain violation, 227 speeding tickets, and 245 tickets for other traffic and moving violations. The department also increased enforcement of aggressive during infractions such as failure to yield and following too closely.

According to Joyce Shaul, the director of MoDOT’s Highway Safety Division, “Research indicates that the presence of law enforcement officers increases the public’s compliance with traffic laws. I applaud Daviess County Sheriff’s Department’s efforts to reduce fatalities and injuries associated with crashes by enforcing traffic laws. The diligence and concern of your community’s law enforcement officers saves lives.”

“We are proud to participate in these statewide enforcement programs,” said Sheriff Kevin Heldenbrand. “Even as we enforce traffic laws, our officers are also trying to educate the public about the importance of safe and responsible driving. This part of our work is important because we don’t want to lose a single member of our community in a traffic crash.”

One person is killed or injured every seven minutes in a traffic crash in Missouri. Over 70% of the drivers who die in motor vehicle crashes are not wearing a safety belt. The use of safety belts and child restraints is the best defense in a traffic crash. These simple devices are proven effective in saving lives.
