Melvin Lee was selected to fulfill the term for David Neth after an interview of board candidates during the regular meeting of the Winston R-6 Board of Education held Thursday, Aug. 19. Mr. Neth resigned about two months ago.

The board was informed that the district had met the Annual Yearly Performance (AYP) standards in both communication arts and math at both building level and district level.

New board policies pertaining to school operations were adopted.

The levy was set for the 2004-2005 school year at $4.0555, with 3.9276 going to the incidental fund and 0.1279 (a little over twelve cents) going to the debt service fund.

During administrative reports, Elementary Principal Lisa Bielby reported an enrollment of 16 in preschool and an enrollment of 110 in kindergarten through sixth grade.

High School Principal Jerry Steele reported an enrollment of 87 in seventh through 12th grades. Both principals said the new school year had gotten off to a good start.

The board reviewed and approved a technology report and the calendar of events. They granted a waiver of residency requirement as per request of a student and parent.

The board reviewed the new handicapped ramp to the preschool, which was provided by a boy scout who was earning his Eagle Scout badge.

The board was also informed of new sign posted at the building which was also an Eagle Scout project.
