Dear Editor:
My name too showed up on the delinquent tax notice for Lake Viking lot #2335 (2001-2003) even though we have not owned the lot since Aug., 2001. I did some investigating and found out why. We sold the lot in 2001 to an individual and he not only failed to pay the taxes on it for that year, but failed to have the deed recorded. Because the deed was not recorded, my name was still showing up as the owner of this lot for 2001 even though we never received a tax notice or even a delinquent tax notice for 2001.
In visiting with Denise Youtsey, Liberty Twp. Collector, she indicated that there are numerous lake lot ownership changes and many deeds are not recorded. However, she receives her tax list from the Lake Association ownership list which can be different from the Recorder’s Office. This is why I never received a tax notice or delinquent notice for 2001. In visiting with Reta Rains, Daviess County treasurer ex-officio collector, she confirmed this explanation and noted that my name would be removed from the list for next year. This lake lot has been sold once again and though the new owner has recorded the deed, he has also failed to pay taxes on it for 2002-2003.
In conclusion, just because someone’s name shows up on the delinquent tax list, we shouldn’t assume things are as they seem. I too am somewhat embarrassed that my name has showed up on the delinquent tax notice, but I did receive a valid explanation.
Sincerely,
George Taylor, Gallatin
