To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Community Action, Green Hills Community Action Agency (GHCAA) will host a ribbon cutting and open house for the public on Friday, Aug. 20, at 1:30 p.m. at the central office, 1506 Oklahoma Avenue, Trenton.

A reunion of past and present staff, board, and volunteers will be followed by short reports of historical perspectives of Community Action in the Green Hills area, and the local connection to the state and national movement.

Agencies reach out to low income people in their communities, address their multiple needs through a comprehensive approach, develop partnerships with other community organizations, involve low-income clients in the agency’s operations, and administer a full range of coordinated programs designed to have a measurable impact on poverty.

Green Hills Community Action Agency serves Caldwell, Daviess, Grundy, Harrison, Linn, Livingston, Mercer, Putnam and Sullivan counties in north central Missouri in the same fashion. GHCAA county offices are the first source of help for local families in need. Trained, responsive personnel and volunteers develop plans with families to alleviate their crisis, stabilize the family, and work toward self-sufficiency.

GHCAA programs, which include community services, family planning, weatherization/rehabilitation, housing development, women’s domestic violence shelter, rental assistance, and employment and training, make a real difference in the lives of residents in the nine Green Hills county service area.

The first community action agencies were established in 1964 to fight poverty as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Economic Opportunity Act. Community Action Agencies are private non-profit or public organizations that were created to combat poverty in geographically designated areas.

The public is invited to attend the GHCAA 40th anniversary special event and help celebrate the success of community action.
