The Gallatin R-5 Board of Education had a pleasant surprise at their July 15 meeting.
The final numbers for 2003-04 appear to be positive, reflecting an increase in the closing balance of about $300,000. The district received state funding in May and June which was not expected to be available, but the state’s economy was stronger than predicted. Mr. Ruse indicated that the unexpected funds were a situation that many other schools also enjoyed.
The board voted to put their policies and procedures online, in order to allow access to anyone who is interested. One official book is also available in the superintendent’s office, which can be provided to anyone who requests it.
Bills in the amount of $267,071.53 were paid.
The board accepted bids for milk, fuel and bread. The milk contract was awarded to Roberts Dairy, LP fuel to Ferrellgas, and bread to Interstate Brands Company. The bid for natural gas was tabled until August.
Two new bus drivers were hired for the 2004-05 school year. Sandy Blondell will take Carla Michener’s route, and David Hickey will replace Ray Clevenger.
The rate of pay for substitute teachers was raised from $65 to $70 per day, and pay for substitute support staff increased from $7 to $8 per hour.
Superintendent Ruse reported that the auditor was here July 20, and results will be available in October. He felt the audit went well, and indicated that a new item in the 2004-05 audit will be a depreciation schedule for schools and school equipment.
Mr. Ruse reported on repairs and additions planned for the 2004-05 school year, which include upgrading the softball field. That work has already begun.
The meeting convened at 6 p.m. with all members present. Board members are Vance Hefley, Allan Lunsford, Clint Vanatta, Sandra Alden, Brice Terry, Dr. Bill Irby, and Mike Ward. Also attending were Mike Burrell, high school principal, Kelly Warren, elementary principal, and Jim Ruse, superintendent.
