Ben Weldon, Gallatin, son of David and Nancy Weldon, was among new officers sworn in at the 2004-05 State 4-H Congress, June 2-4, on the University of Missouri campus.
The installation of new offices and state representative capped an invigorating state congress, which included workshops on leadership and team building skills, seminars on the latest science, fitness and health information, plus skits and a chance to learn more about educational opportunities at MU.
The new officers are: president, Bill Ehrich, Laclede, Mo., son of Roger and Alicyn Ehrich; vice president, Jared Liles, Nevada, son of Kenneth and Connie Liles; secretary, Rebecca Day, Montrose, daughter of Deborah Day and Roger Day; treasurer, Ben Weldon, Gallatin, son of David and Nancy Weldon.
“It’s exciting to be chosen a state officer, yet we know we have a lot of work to get done,” Ehrich said. “There are a number of projects we’ll be working on pretty quickly.”
A top priority for the team is to reinvigorate the Kids Helping Kids fund, Day said, only minutes after being announced as incoming secretary. Other officers quickly nodded in agreement.
“We have raised $20,000 and need reach our $60,000 goal,” she said. The fund, which started after the September 11, 2001 tragedy, will help support kids and their families who have been victims of natural and other disasters.
Also on this officer team’s “to do” list is to increase membership participation. “We have great membership numbers throughout the 4-H clubs across the state,” said Weldon. “But we hope to increase member participation in regional- and state-level events and contests.
“The more 4-Hers that participate in those events the better the state organization becomes,” said Liles.
There were 301 4-H youth and 45 adults who attended this 59th annual Congress, according to Joyce Taylor, MU 4-H specialist and coordinator of the event. Members also elected regional representative to the state organization and conducted meetings to discuss regional issues.
