Special awards and recognition were given to the 47 GHS students who participated in track and golf this spring at an assembly in the gymnasium the evening of May 19. Refreshments were served in the commons following the presentations.

Christy Prather, girls track coach, presented letters to each of her team members and spoke of the improvements each athlete made during the season. Two of the girls relay teams broke school records this year. The 4×100-meter relay team of Katie Jarboe, Katie Ward, Kelsie Parker and Trisha Sprague set a new GHS record of 55.26. The 4×200-meter relay team of Ward, Story, Jarboe and Lindsey Robertson posted a new time of 1:54.30. Ward, who broke her own school record in the pole vault with a leap of 9’2″, advanced to state along with Story and Sprague.

Coach Prather gave special awards to the five top members of the high point relay team (4×400) — Keira Story, Lindsey Robertson, Kelsie Parker, Katie Jarboe, and Alyssa Strein. Kelsie Parker received the award for most relay points. Alyssa Strein received the Newcomer’s Award, Katie Jarboe earned the Bulldog Award, and Keira Story was named MVP (most points). Trisha Sprague recorded the 2nd highest points for the team.

Four-year letter winners in girls track were Heather Berry, Lindsey Love, Allison McLaughlin, Keira Story, and Katie Ward. They also received key chains from the Booster Club.

Mark Cole, boys track coach, presented the boys MVP award to Kyle Hefley, most improved to Kevin Black, and a four-year letter to Colby Swanstone. He presented letters to each of his athletes and commented on the improvements each made during the year.

Golf Coach Chris Elbert, just back from his team’s third place finish at the state tournament, presented four-year letters to Duke Burge and Patrick Dickinson, most improved to Aaron Everly, and MVP-low stroke average to Duke Burge, who earned fifth highest individual at the state meet. He also presented letters to Dillon Bird, Aaron Everly, Garett Houghton, Mark Robbins, and Sean Wood. Each golfer was recognized for achievements during the season.

Coach Elbert also presented special awards. The United States Marines distinguished athlete award was presented to Colby Swanstone. The MSHSAA Award of Excellence went to Cori Nichols and Patrick Dickinson.

National Student-Athlete awards were presented to Kyle Hefley and Katie Ward for varsity track; Colby Swanstone for varsity football; Brett Wilkinson for JV football and JV basketball; Whitney Wright for varsity football cheerleading; Katie Heldenbrand for varsity basketball cheerleading; Patrick Dickinson and Keira Story for varsity basketball; Klint Kloepping for varsity wrestling; Aaron Everly and Whitney Boyd for varsity golf; Cori Nichols for varsity

softball; Hattie Rains for JV softball; and Katie Jarboe for JV basketball. National Student- Athlete Day was April 6.

Athletes recognized for participating in three sports during the 2003-04 school years were freshmen Nic Burrell, Justin Duffy, and Brett Wilkinson; sophomores Dillon Bird, Katie Jarboe, and Trisha Sprague; juniors Kyle Hefley, Marcus Lacy, Jason McGee, Kelsie Parker, Lindsey

Robertson, Adam Strein; and seniors Duke Burge, Patrick Dickinson, Keira Story, Colby Swanstone, and Katie Ward.

The final award of the evening was presented by Sgt. Kevin Miller of the United States Army Reserves. The Scholar-Athlete Award, given by the United States Army Reserves, was presented to Katie Ward and Patrick Dickinson.
