State goals reached by area track and field athletes

Local athletes competing in last weekend’s state track and field meet in Jefferson City were well-rewarded for their efforts as both Gallatin and Pattonsburg girls earned time on the award’s

stand.

Gallatin seniors Katie Ward and Keira Story earned medals in their respective specialities, the pole vault and 300-meter hurdles. Ward, the GHS record-holder (9’2″) in the pole vault, gained her fourth state medal in that event on Saturday by placing fifth in the Class 2 competition. She also finished sixth as a junior and sophomore, and took seventh as a freshman. She cleared the bar at 9′ at state. The winning vault came from Pierce City’s Stephanie Miller, who cleared 9’9″.

Story realized her dream of a state medal by finishing eighth in the Class 2 300-meter hurdles race. Her preliminary time of 48.87 was fourth best in her preliminary heat and seventh best going into Saturday’s final. Lathrop’s Audrey Bailey won the event in 45.25, just .06 off the Class 2 record.

Gallatin sophomore Trisha Sprague finished eleventh overall in Friday’s shot put competition.

Her best toss of the day was 33′-7 3/4″. Elisha Hunt of Linn bettered her nearest competitor by nearly five feet to win the event with a toss of 44′-6 3/4″.

Pattonsburg’s girls came through with medals in all four of their Class 1 events. Amy Huffman grabbed a second place finish in the 100-meter dash. She took the best preliminary time, 12.53 seconds, into the final but was edged at the line by .01 of a second by Rich Hill’s Shelley Seider, who won in 12.72. Huffman also took fourth in the 200-meter dash after running 26.30.

Stanberry’s Sileen Kammer won in 25.38.

The Lady Panther 4×100-meter relay team finished fifth in 53.30. The 4×200-meter relay team placed fourth in 1:51.86. Members of both teams were Huffman, Jessica Schneider, Trayce deJong and Whitney Mason.
