Kansas City attorney Charlie Speer, with the support of three New York law firms, has filed another suit against Premium Standard Farms and ContiGroup Companies, Inc.
Speer has been in litigation with the company for nearly a decade. This time he filed a class action suit in Jackson County. Some of the named plaintiffs have been with Speer in previous cases. He is also asking the court to allow those living within 10 miles of a Premium Standard Farms facility to join the case.
“This is disappointing, but not surprising,” says John Meyer, CEO of Premium Standard Farms in a press release. “Litigation of this nature will no doubt benefit the lawyers more then the citizens of Northern Missouri. We have spent the last 10 years providing jobs and staying on the forefront of environmental technology. It’s unfortunate that we also have to defend ourselves against this type of baseless litigation,” Meyer said.
Speer is receiving assistance in this case from two New York City plaintiff litigation firms, as well as from Kennedy & Madonna, LLP, the law firm of Robert Kennedy Jr., of the Waterkeeper Alliance.
Premium Standard Farms has invested over $12 million in environmental technology over the past five years, and recently announced it will shortly begin construction on a $10 million system that will eliminate traditional anaerobic treatment lagoons and create a value added fertilizer from swine waste.
Two of the named plaintiffs have been actively involved in the discussions that led to the development of this system.
