QUESTION: Who decides what is printed in the Courthouse News section of the newspaper and is there anything that is not public information?
ANSWER: Nearly everything done in the various divisions of the Circuit Court is public information. Therefore, it is easier to list that which is not public. Those items include: all juvenile proceedings such as adoptions, delinquency and criminal cases involving a minor, 96 hour involuntary commitments, and sealed criminal cases when the defendant successfully completes probation after receiving a suspended imposition of sentence. Generally, all other courtroom proceedings, files and records are public and accessible by you at any time. Access to this information is available by requesting it in person, by telephone, or fax.
The newspaper editors ultimately decide when, what, and how the information is printed and presented.
