Gallatin FFA earns 20th place Top Chapter AwardConvention memorable success for Pattonsburg Chapter, Winston receives charter
Gallatin FFA placed 20th out of 292 chapters in the state, earning a Top Chapter Award at the 76th Missouri FFA Convention. Only 10 percent of state chapters receive the Top Chapter Award each year.
Chapter activity awards, sponsored by Farm Credit Services, are given to chapters achieving excellence in student, chapter and community development. Gallatin FFA Chapter advisors are Chris Henderson and Dennis Croy.
Gallatin FFA chapter’s student development activities included eighth grade recruitment, FFA Supervised Agricultural Programs and the implementation of a chapter scholarship program for members who are pursuing a degree in agriculture.
In addition, chapter members took part in the Lake Viking Kid’s Kamp for sight-impaired children and cooperated with five other chapters and additional groups to hold three FFA Career Development Events. These activities encourage the chapter to develop individual and cooperative activities that will enhance students’ life skills.
Chapter development activities included the initiation of a Junior FFA Chapter for middle school students, fruit sales and National FFA Week activities. Gallatin FFA members also worked with the Daviess County Fair Board in helping with the Daviess County Fair and Junior Livestock Show.
Gallatin’s community development activities included hosting the second annual Gallatin FFA Tractor Pull, the Adopt-a-Highway program, and donating toys and food to the needy at Christmas.
The top chapters are submitted to the National FFA Organization where they compete for the National FFA Chapter Award. The competition will be held next fall at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky.
The Missouri FFA Association has more than 21,500 members. More than 7,000 FFA members and guests attended the annual state convention held April 15-16 in Columbia. FFA strives to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
Erin Croy is first place winner in Proficiency
Erin Croy, member of the Gallatin FFA Chapter, was named the second place winner of the Home and/or Community Development Proficiency Award at the 76th Missouri FFA Convention.
Erin, a junior at Gallatin High School, is the daughter of Dennis and Sheri Croy.
Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience. Home and/or Community Development is one of 50 proficiency awards presented at the state level. The Missouri Agriculture Industries Council sponsors the award.
Erin contributed many hours of labor to improvement projects around her family’s farm. By utilizing carpentry skills learned through agriculture class, she has helped build her family’s deck and assembled a hog building on her family’s farm which she helped purchase herself. Erin is also involved in several community service projects ranging from Adopt-A-Highway to volunteering with the Daviess County Fair.
Erin plans to attend college and major in animal sciences or agriculture business.
As an FFA member, Erin attended the National FFA Convention, participated in the National FFA Convention Courtesy Corps and was a state finalist in the FFA Creed Speaking competition. Outside of FFA, she is president of the Knee-Hi 4-H Club, a junior deacon at the First Christian Church and a member of National Honor Society.
Michelle Chadwick recognized as Area 2 Star
The Missouri FFA Association recognized Michelle Lee Chadwick of the Gallatin FFA Chapter as the Area 2 Star in Placement at the 76th Missouri FFA Convention. Her parents are Darrel and Rhonda Chadwick.
Area Stars in Placement are selected based upon outstanding achievement in work experience in agricultural business as part of a student’s supervised agricultural experience program and active participation in FFA. Area 2 covers 24 chapters in the Northwest District.
MFA Inc., Columbia, sponsors the 13 Area Star in Placement awards.
Michelle’s SAE began her freshman year working in her aunt’s restaurant and at her mother’s business. She began work for the Missouri Land Title Company her sophomore year and has continued with the company for the past three years. Her responsibilities have increased along with her abilities.
Michelle has served as vice-president and secretary in her FFA Chapter, and secretary of the Area 2 FFA Chapter. She has competed in state career development events including Knowledge, Entomology, Public Speaking, and Agricultural Sales. She has attended state FFA leadership camp, National FFA Convention, Missouri Public Speaking Academy, Made for Excellence, and a host of other leadership events.
Michelle is the Vice-President of the National Honor Society, a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, and is currently the editor of the school yearbook.
Upon graduation, Michelle plans to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia majoring in Agricultural Journalism. She plans to enter a career in advertising and marketing while living in a rural setting.
Gallatin Agricultural Sales Team places third
The Gallatin FFA Chapter placed third in the FFA Agricultural Sales Career Development Event at the 76th Missouri FFA Convention. There were 23 teams in the competition.
The third place team members are Emily Gay, Michelle Chadwick, Erin Croy and Melanie Jones. Emily ranked 12th, Michelle ranked 16th, Erin 20th and Melanie 46th out of 82 individuals.
Entries include an individual sales presentation and team sales situation for an agricultural product. Competitors are also asked to demonstrate their ability to relate to customers, prospect for customers and carry out promotions.
Sponsored by University of Missouri-Columbia College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, this contest is one way the FFA prepares student members for career success. Career development events engage student learning and make a real connection to lifetime goals.
Hattie Rains places fourth
The Missouri FFA Association awarded Hattie Rains, Gallatin FFA Chapter, fourth place in the FFA Prepared Public Speaking Division 2 Career Development Event at the 76th Missouri FFA Convention. Twenty students competed at the state level.
Division 2 Prepared Public Speakers deliver a four-to-six minute speech based on an agriculture topic that they have selected and researched. The contestants present their speech in front of a panel of judges and then undergo an additional four minutes of questions. The judges base their decision on the information presented, the student’s knowledge of the subject, the delivery of the speech and the answers to the questions.
MFA, Inc. and the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources sponsored the event and plaques.
Kelsi Parker is part of FFA Talent
Kelsi Parker of the Gallatin FFA Chapter performed a clogging routine as part of the FFA Talent at the 76th Missouri FFA Convention in Columbia April 15-16.
Mike Burrell named Honorary State FFA Degree recipient
Michael Burrell of Gallatin was named as an Honorary State FFA Degree recipient at the 76th Missouri FFA Convention. Mr. Burrell is currently Principal of Gallatin High School, a position he has held for 20 years. He has provided assistance and facilities for Area 2 activities and helps with local and district FFA Career Development Events. Mr. Burrell received his State Farmer degree in 1974.
The Missouri FFA Association recognizes Honorary State FFA Degree recipients each year at its annual state convention for their valuable efforts and contributions to the FFA organization and its members. Those eligible to receive the Honorary FFA Degree include farmers, school superintendents, principals, members of the board of education, chapter advisors, teachers, staff members in agricultural education, businessmen and others who are helping to advance agricultural education and the FFA while rendering outstanding service.
Pattonsburg FFA places second in Horse Judging, eighth in Knowledge
Fifteen members from the Pattonsburg FFA Chapter attend the state convention at Columbia. The chapter was represented at the convention by the FFA Knowledge Team, consisting of Justin Nalle, Mike Foster, and JJ Allee. At districts the team placed 8th at state the team competed against 51 other teams and placed in a group three rating.
The Horse Judging team place 6th at district contest and at state competed against 47 other teams and received a group two rating. Members of that team were Trayce deJong, Krista Hicks, and Aleah Sperry.
The chapter was also represented by two state voting delegates. Voting delegates represent their chapter by discussing and voting on important issues that come before the Missouri FFA Association; these members were Tracey Mason and Katelyn Hulet.
Elisa Bowman attended the convention and represented the chapter in the FFA Press Room as a guest writer for the convention. Emily Hulet and Josh Jeffries represented the chapter by accepting the chapter activity award and being present at the FFA President’s dinner, Emily Hulet also assists as the chapter photographer.
Other members represented the chapter as courtesy corps members. These members serve a vital role in the conduct of the convention by assist guest to their seats, assisting the staff as gate keepers, and helping FFA members find their way to certain locations and contests. These members were Jeremy Humphrey, Andrew Hulet, Whitney Mason, and Justin Coffey.
Advisor, Amy Sullivan commented that this was a very successful convention for the chapter: “More members earned their way to convention this year that any other in recent chapter history. Our students were able to meet and compete with 8,000 of their fellow FFA members from across the state. The memories and opportunities this experience has provided for these members will stay with them for a lifetime. They will be able to bring these experiences back to fellow members and enrich our chapter.”
Pattonsburg FFA recognizes local students

Members from the Pattonsburg FFA Chapter attended the Area II FFA Awards Banquet on April 8. This annual event recognizes and awards those members who have succeed in many different areas of the FFA.
Local members who received awards that night were: Aleah Sperry, silver award in creed speaking; Tracey Mason, silver in the FFA treasurer’s book; Elisa Bowman, silver in the FFA scrapbook competition; Whitney Mason, gold for the FFA secretary’s book; Justin Nalle, JJ Allee, and Mike Foster, 8th place in the FFA Knowledge competition. Elisa Bowman was also inducted as an Area Officer.
The highlight of the evening was the awarding of the Area FFA Degree. Two members received this high honor, Emily Hulet and Megan Sperry.
