The Gallatin VFW Ladies Auxiliary presented a 50 year pin to Virginia Walls on Thursday, Feb. 26 during a ceremony in the unit of the Lake Viking Health Care Center. According to President Bessie Redman, it was the first 50-year pin presented to a member of the organization that she was aware of.
Mrs. Walls, 89, joined the auxiliary in 1953. She lived at Pattonsburg for many years and was a member of that auxiliary until it disbanded in 1993. That same year, she joined the Gallatin auxiliary.
Mrs. Walls was born on Friday, Nov. 13, 1914. She will have been in the Lake Viking Health Care Center for a year as of Feb. 18. She still has a home in Pattonsburg.
Eight members of the Ladies Auxiliary were present for the ceremony, along with a friend from Washington state who is an auxiliary member, and two friends from Pattonsburg.
“I’ve had a lot of good times,” said Mrs. Walls. “I’m glad to be a member of this good organization. I sure am proud of this pin.”
Some of the good times she recalls include being stuck on the Paseo bridge back when it required a toll. The ladies were on their way to an auxiliary meeting. They couldn’t find any money for the toll and there was a long line of cars behind tooting their horns. She also remembers going to St. Louis on a train to attend a meeting.
