The connection between Edgar and Helen Muller almost didn’t happen. Helen was teaching seventh grade in 1946. One of her students told his cousin, Edgar, what a great teacher she was. Interested, Edgar decided to attend a PTA meeting to get a look at her. Unfortunately Helen decided not to attend that meeting.

Edgar and Helen did eventually hookup and were married Dec. 22, 1946. They lived in Wichita. Edgar, originally from Gallatin, worked at Boeing aircraft. After they were married, Helen could no loner teach, as teachers were not allowed to be married in those days. She became a homemaker.

In January 1948, their first daughter, Martha (Epping, now residing in Riverside) was born. In September 1949, their second daughter Lynda (Johnson, now living in Lexington) was born. In January 1950, they moved back to Gallatin. Edgar joined his father Tom (T.J.) in farming.

For the next six months Helen made a home for Edgar and the two little girls in a house with no electricity and no running water. Later that year, the farm next to his dad’s was for sale. Edgar, Helen and the girls moved into a wonderful 100 year old farm house that did have electricity and a hand pump in the kitchen. For 18 years this was home.

Helen had gone back to teaching — one year in Jamesport and 24 years in Gallatin. In 1970, they moved to town. Edgar farmed and later became a full time mail carrier for the U.S. Postal service. Helen retired in 1980 and Edgar in 1988.

They have been united in marriage for over 57 years. They have shared the joy of one another, watched their daughters grow and raise families of their own. They have two grandchildren, Tonya and John, and four great-grandchildren. Edgar and Helen currently reside at Lake Viking Health Care.
