To the dismay of Gallatin’s Lady Bulldogs, Lathrop’s girls looked nothing like the Mule team they beat earlier in the season. Lathrop, which entered the game 20-2 with its only losses coming back-to-back to Gallatin and Hamilton in the Hamilton Tournament, put it all together Friday night and rolled over Gallatin, 44-22, in the final 2004 game on the GHS floor.
Despite playing even basketball (16-16) with the Lady Mules in the second half, the Lady Bulldogs lost this game in the first four minutes of the second quarter. Gallatin led, 4-3, for several minutes off the opening tip, but Lathrop sprinted to a 28-6 halftime advantage while holding the home team scoreless for the final seven minutes of the half. The Lady Mules double- teamed the ball all over the floor but the Lady Bulldogs nonetheless got some good looks at the hoop that simply wouldn’t go down.
Lathrop led, 30-6, before Emily Gay popped a pair of free throws and added a field goal from the low post with 4:58 left in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs, who saw their regular season end at 12-12, finished with only two players, Gay and Katie Ward, with more than one field goal.
Ward topped all Gallatin scorers with eight points, followed by Gay with seven.
