Memorial services for Donald Murphey, a native of Pattonsburg, were held Feb. 4 at the Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak, Iowa, with military rites.

Donald Lester Murphey, 82, Red Oak, Iowa, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.

The son of Oscar and Flossie (Gardner) Murphey, he was born on Sept. 5, 1921, in Pattonsburg, where he was raised.

Mr. Murphey was a radio operator in the Army during WWII.

Mr. Murphey was united in marriage to Helen M. Drummond on June 8, 1943, at Gallatin. They moved to Red Oak in 1948, when he started to work for the Union Carbide Battery Company as a supervisor, retiring 35 years later. After his retirement, he drove cars for Belt GM Center.

Mr. Murphey was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Opal Nalle, and a grandchild, Corina.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen M. Murphey of Red Oak; one daughter, Donna Key of Ankeny, Iowa; one son, Rick Murphey of Plano, Texas; a half-brother, George Murphey of Arlington, Texas; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
