Leblond made the last varsity games to be played in their 33-year-old gymnasium memorable last night by sweeping Gallatin in boys and girls sets. LeBlond’s girls pushed a 7-point halftime lead into a 39-22 victory while the Golden Eagle boys powered to a 52-40 decision.
Leblond’s girls used man-to-man coverage to throttle Gallatin. The Lady Bulldogs had scoring opportunities but were frustrated by shots repeatedly falling off the mark.
The boys game was marked by physical, zone defensive play. LeBlond used pressure on the perimeter to force Gallatin out of offensive schemes while Gallatin countered with a zone packing the paint. Matt Holley, a 6-6 senior, fouled out on an aggressive offensive foul with 2:21 remaining but with the game mostly decided.
The Bulldogs hit shots at the quarter buzzers, Kyle Hefley with a trey ending the first and Jeremiah Gibson’s layup ending the third, which kindled comeback hopes. At one point Gallatin closed to within five. But LeBlond reeled off a 6-0 spurt on breakaway layups to open a 41-28 lead in the fourth quarter, then hit five of seven free throws down the stretch for the win.
Noteworthy in the final moments during Leblond’s senior night festivities was the crowd’s chant for senior Jeremy Capell to enter the game. With :40 on the clock, Capell became the last of five seniors to play and scored the final basket in the last varsity game played in the compact gymnasium. Leblond seniors cut the strings from the baskets for the school’s trophy case after the boys’ game. The Eagles move into a new gymnasium next season.
