The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Sportsmanship Essay contest is held every year for seventh and eighth grade students. The 2003-2004 essay topic was “Things I Wish Adults Knew About Sportsmanship.”
The contest was won locally by Cameron King, a seventh grader at Gallatin High School. Cameron is the son of Eric and Lucinda King. His essay was sent on to Northwest District competition, one of eight districts in Missouri. His essay won the district competition and was sent to state competition.
Cameron’s English teacher is Glenda St. John, who has had several district and two other state qualifiers in the past five years.
As a district winner, Cameron will receive an additional state-level certificate when the judging is complete and will also be invited as a special guest of the MSHSAA to attend the 2004 Sportsmanship Summit in Columbia on Aug. 5. He also received a packet of prizes from various Missouri attractions, including tickets to Worlds of Fun and the Renaissance Festival.
