This year marks the tenth annual Spay Day USA, which is co-sponsored nationally by PETsMart charities and Natural Life Pet Products. Since Spay Day’s inception in 1995, participants have altered over 1,000,000 animals. With the help of spay/neuter programs the number of homeless animals euthanized in the U.S. has fallen from approximately 13 million in 1973 to about four million currently.
During the week of Feb. 24, the Green Hills Animal Shelter of Trenton will participate in their fourth annual Spay Day USA. We have arranged with area veterinarians to offer reduced spays and neuters between Feb. 23- 27.
Call the following veterinary hospitals for details on their reduced spay/neuter program: Animal Kingdom Veterinary Hospital, 359-3516; Honey Creek Veterinary Hospital, 359-9908; and Trenton Veterinary Service, 359-5920.
In addition, we will provide educational materials to Trenton High School FFA students, who will, under the supervision of Brian Robinson, THS Agriculture instructor, take the information into the elementary school to help teach children about cat and dog overpopulation.
Spay Day Questions & Answers
Q: What is Spay Day USA?
Led by the Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF), Spay Day USA is America’s premier national day of action to promote the spaying or neutering of companion animals. There are three important reasons for having a Spay Day USA event each year:
* To raise the public’s awareness of the severe companion animal overpopulation problem.
* To promote spay/neuter surgery as a primary means of addressing companion animal overpopulation.
* To inspire each humane American to help prevent the births of surplus litters by sponsoring the spaying or neutering of at least one companion animal or feral cat.
Q: When is Spay Day USA and when was it first created?
Spay Day USA is the last Tuesday of February. However, many local groups recognize Spay Day USA during the weekend before or after this day, during the entire last week of February, and/or during the entire month(s) of February and/or March. Spay Day USA was created by the Doris Day Animal League in 1995.
Q: How has Spay Day USA made a difference?
During Spay Day USA’s first nine years, participants spayed or neutered over one million animals. When you consider that:
* Two unaltered cats and all their unaltered descendants can number as many as 420,000 in just seven years.
* Two unaltered dogs and their descendants can number 67,000 in six years.
* A 1999 survey of 186 shelters revealed an average cost of $176 to handle each homeless animal.
* It is clear that Spay Day USA has, potentially, prevented millions of surplus births.
Q: How can I participate in Spay Day USA?
Anyone can participate in Spay Day USA simply by having one animal spayed or neutered! Let people know that if they do not have an animal companion, or if theirs are already altered, they can participate by offering to pay for the spay or neuter of a friend’s or relative’s animal companion. They can also donate money to pay for the spay or neuter of a shelter animal awaiting adoption, a feral cat, or the animal companion of an elderly or low-income person.
