Gallatin’s boys moved to 4-2 in the GRC last night after a 55-31 victory over visiting Princeton. The Bulldogs outgunned the Tigers in all 4 quarters but blew the lid off with a 19-6 surge in the third quarter.
Senior Pat Dickinson provided the third quarter spark with three low post buckets in the span of less than a minute. Duke Burge nailed a trey and Jeremiah Gibson added another from behind a Dickinson screen as the Bulldogs doubled up the Tigers on the scoreboard in the third period.
The Tigers, who had to fight for every bucket, were limited to only 11 field goals and hit just one of many three-point tries.
Gibson led a balanced Bulldog scoring attack with 15 points. Colby Swanstone finished with 11, Burge totaled 10 and Dickinson chipped in eight. Jeff Lutzen scored in only the second and third periods but led Princeton with 10 points.
Gallatin, 16-4 overall, travels to King City, 14-7, on Thursday for what shapes up as a fight for third place in GRC standings. Like the Bulldogs, Wildkat losses have come at the hands of Hamilton and South Harrison. Gallatin polishes off the conference slate Friday by hosting a very- much improved Stanberry team (11-11) that blew away Worth County last night, 85-44, behind eight three-pointers.
Title hopes snuffed
South Harrison dashed Gallatin’s hopes for a share of the GRC title last Friday after the home Bulldogs suffered a 53-43 setback. South Harrison remains unbeaten in the league, along with Hamilton. The two teams meet this Friday in Bethany.
South Harrison ended the game with a flurry of free throws and easy shots under the basket after beating Gallatin’s defensive pressure out front. Duke Burge ended a three-minute GHS drought at the 2:57 mark with a trey, but the visitors answered on the other end with a three-pointer. The killer bucket for Gallatin came seconds later when Adam Watson slipped to the hoop from the base line to punch up a 46-41 SHHS lead.
Colby Swanstone hit a leaner in the lane that closed the gap to 47-43. Ryan Madison missed the front end of a bonus foul but teammate Andy Butler hauled in the rebound and forced Gallatin to foul again. Watson converted twice from the line and Zach Kadolph went coast-to-coast off a missed GHS trey attempt to put the game out of reach in the final seconds.
Gallatin led, 9-8, after the opening period but a 18-5 run propelled South Harrison to a 27-16 halftime advantage. Back-to-back treys from Jeremiah Gibson, along with a sky hook from Swanstone, enabled Gallatin to get back to within four points late in the third quarter.
Gallatin shot 75% ( six of eight ) on the night from the free throw line but South Harrison hit twice as many foul shots (13) in nearly triple the number of attempts (22).
Swanstone finished with 19 points for Gallatin. Gibson added 11. Dustin Nail and Aaron McQuinn paced South Harrison with 14 each.
