The Roy Hazzard family escaped without injury from a fire at their residence at 30478 230th St., south of Gallatin at about 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22.

According to Fire Chief Doug Hamilton, the two-story house had flames coming out the roof around the flue when the Gallatin Fire District arrived at the scene.

The fire originated in the area of the flue and spread through the attic and to the second story. Hamilton Fire was requested for Mutual Aid. Firefighters were able to contain the fire until the water supply was depleted.

Even with drafting water from a pond and utilizing tankers, efforts were unsuccessful to save the residence. Another factor affecting the fire other than the water supply was the very high contents load inside the residence that restricted access for a feasible interior attack.

Fire crews remained on scene for six hours with the inevitable loss.

The family is staying with their son Dale Hazzard in Trenton.
