Heading into the second half, Gallatin’s boys knew they would have to hit their free throws in order to turn back a pesky Albany team. That’s exactly what they did.
After struggling at the charity stripe in recent contests, the Bulldogs caught fire at the line, hitting 17 of 17 foul shots in the final 16 minutes and 19 of 24 for the game as they held off a
determined Warrior squad, 71-63.
“With us, it’s just a concentration thing,” said GHS head coach David Prather. “This is where we should be all the time,” he commented, while adding that players ran in practice after missing 16 of 33 free throw attempts in last Tuesday’s Plattsburg game.
Albany canned 19 of 26 foul shots in the game. That, and four three-pointers by Jake Nichols at opportune moments, kept the Warriors in the game until the Bulldogs were able to gain some breathing room early in the fourth quarter. Gallatin built four leads of three or more points in the first three quarters but failed to hold any.
The score stood 24-20 in Gallatin’s favor at the half. The Bulldogs outscored the Warriors, 28-24, in the fourth quarter.
Jeremiah Gibson finished with 25 points to lead Gallatin. He missed both ends of a two-shot free throw in the first quarter but then finished on a mission by hitting all of his last 10 attempts from
the stripe. Gibson also led in assists (four) and steals (six).
Colby Swanstone turned in a solid line of stats for the Bulldogs with 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Kyle Hefley finished with 12 points, including eight points off layups in the fourth quarter.
Duke Burge tallied nine points for the Dogs, including four of four big free throws down the stretch. Marcus Lacy came off the bench to score eight for Gallatin.
Gallatin faces a pair of tough conference matchups next week, both on the road. The Bulldogs travel to Hamilton on Tuesday to face a Hornet team 3-0 in the league, and head to King City to face the 2-1 Wildkats, who rode a 26-point effort by Kevin Potter to a 74-60 victory over Stanberry on Friday.
