A year-end report filed by Green Hills Community Action Agency shows that over 7,100 individuals in 3,130 households were assisted with services provided by the agency in the 9-county region which includes Daviess County.
Over $5 million in federal, state and local funds were administered to provide assistance to these individuals during year 2003.
GHCAA provides a variety of community services, including a women’s shelter, housing development, rental assistance, employment and training services, and family planning. The service center for Daviess County is located in Gallatin, ph: 663-3211.
Life skills workshops on 14 different subjects were provided to 130 families in the 9-county region with nearly half indicating improved self-reliance as a result. The case management program provided services to 36 families of which 11 families made steps towards self-sufficiency.
There were 1,325 households receiving energy payment assistance to prevent or delay a disconnect from an energy supplier. There were 338 households helped in retaining their homes with homeless assistance and emergency food and shelter programs. Community donated goods and services across the 9-county region assisted 2,101 persons with emergencies; 3,720 individuals without food were provided 6,747 food orders by agency assisted food pantries.
The Green Hills Women’s Shelter provided services to 397 women and 739 children in the sixth year of operation. Over 580 emergency shelter nights of stay were given to 92 women and children. Over 400 hotline calls were answered.
Other women’s shelter services included crisis assistance, legal advocacy, medical assistance, relocation and employment assistance. The shelter phone is 660-359-3297; the hotline phone is 1-800-942-0649.
Family planning services were delivered to 2,592 patients, involving a range of reproductive health services through a total of 188 women’s health care clinics in 11 locations in the service area.
Eight new single family homes are now under construction in the agency’s housing development program (3 at Trenton, 2 at Chillicothe, 3 at Bethany). With apartment complexes in Jamesport and Pattonsburg plus 42 other single family homes, the agency will total 96 residential units by late spring, 2004.
Another 64 homes were weatherized through rehabilitation work. It is estimated that energy savings of approximately 20% are realized by fully weatherizing a housing unit.
Forty adult clients were placed in employment at a living wage through agency employment and training programs. Of these, 32 also graduated from degree/certification programs. In addition, four youth age clients (age 14-18) received high school diplomas with older youth placed in employment.
