Thirty-seven veterans were recognized for their service to country and community at a Veteran’s Day celebration held Nov. 11 at the Corner Café in Gallatin.

V.F.W. Post #2172 and American Legion Post #68 hosted the breakfast which was open to all veterans and military service men and women who have served their country.

Veterans from WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Dessert Storm and Iraq were present as the American flags waved in their honor up and down the streets of Gallatin.

Quartermasters Jack Mooney and Jean Taylor welcomed the group, and a hearty breakfast followed, compliments of the Gallatin V.F.W. and Legions Posts.

A special certificate was presented to each veteran on behalf of the United States Postal Service by Gallatin Postmaster Carl Wiles. The certificate was designed by Gallatin Postal Sales Associate and graphic artist Phil Kimberling.

Two postage stamps, The Purple Heart stamp and The Korean War Veterans Memorial stamp, were applied to each certificate given.

“The United States Postal Service honors the men and women who have sacrificed to keep us free with the issuance of the Purple Heart postage stamp and the Korean War Veterans Memorial stamp,” said Postmaster Wiles.

The names of veterans receiving the certificate are: Cecil Akin, Dale Alexander, Marvin Blackburn, Gordon Brown, Glen Burton, Carl Carder, Herb Carpenter, Tom Cragg, Toby Dougherty, Harold Gay, Arland Haynes, Penny Kopp, Kenneth Lukehart, Tom McWilliams;

Nationally and locally, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion reach out to America’s youth and military families. Some of the activities include: The American Legion Scholarship: An academic scholarship awarded each year to a graduating senior at Gallatin R-5 School; Liberty Trees for America: A nationwide program that plants seeds and cuttings from historic American trees to preserve our country’s heritage for future generations; The Voice of Democracy: A national audio essay contest that awards $2.5 million in college scholarships; Operation Uplink: Free prepaid long-distance phone calls are provided to lonely veterans in hospitals and nursing homes.
