Post-season football honors continue to roll in for Gallatin R-5 athletes after the release this week of the 2003 Northwest All-District Football Team. Three GHS seniors were recognized on the Class One honor squad, which was dominated by players from playoff teams.

Senior quarterback Duke Burge was picked on the offensive team, along with West Platte sophomore QB Eric Humes. Burge set GHS records this season for pass attempts (180) and completions (94) and finished second on the all-time list with 1,240 passing yards. He threw for 11 touchdowns and rushed for four touchdowns.

Senior Colby Swanstone turned in the best ever performance this season by a Bulldog wide receiver after catching a record 62 passes for a record 983 yards and eight touchdowns. He was joined on the all-district roster at end by West Platte’s Brian Barmann, East Buchanan’s Andrew Mead, Polo’s T. J. White, Braymer’s Kyle Combs and Sweet Springs wide receiver Tommy Summers.

Senior Tyler Nichols was a repeat all-district selection for Gallatin at linebacker. Nichols registered 157 tackles, including 126 solo stops, recovered three fumbles and intercepted one pass this season. In the last two seasons combined, he chalked up 282 tackles for an average of 14 tackles per game.

Area athletes picked for the Class Two All-District Team included: RB Jared Jennings, Sr., South Harrison; TE/LB Aaron McQuinn, Sr., South Harrison; OT Matt Rauber, Sr., Hamilton; OT/DT Ryan Madison, Sr., South Harrison; OC Logan Wright, Jr., South Harrison; DL Justin Graham, Sr., South Harrison; and P Jamie Hanson, Sr., Hamilton.

Following is the complete all-district team for Class One as picked by Northwest Missouri sportswriters and sportscasters represented at the selection meeting:

Class One Offense: Quarterback — Eric Humes, Sr., West Platte, and Duke Burge, Sr., Gallatin. Runningback — Nate Craft, Sr., Princeton; Brett Cavanah, Sr., Princeton; Andy Boggs, Sr., Slater; and Kyle Gross, Jr., Mid-Buchanan. Wide Receiver/Tight End — Brian Barmann, Sr., West Platte; Andrew Mead, Jr., East Buchanan; Colby Swanstone, Sr., Gallatin; T. J. White, Sr., Polo; Kyle Combs, Sr., Braymer; and Tommy Summers, Sr., Sweet Springs. Line — Jason Estes, Sr., Princeton; Brock Donelson, Jr., Princeton; Brian Spry, Sr., Polo; Lucas Wagoner, Sr., West Platte; and Derek Kasner, Sr., Mid-Buchanan.
