Gallatin R-5 varsity basketball teams opened the 2003-2004 season Tuesday night with a couple of solid efforts, but only the Bulldog boys saw their season open on a winning note.

The Bulldogs, backed by a combined 43-point scoring effort from seniors Jeremiah Gibson and Duke Burge, edged East Buchanan, 63-61, in non-conference action in Gower. East Buchanan led, 27-23, at the half, but Gallatin stormed back with a 16-7 advantage in the 3rd period and 27- 24 scoring edge in the 4th quarter. Gibson pumped in a trio of three-pointers and finished with 25 points. Burge also nailed three treys and finished with 18 points. Juniors Kyle Hefley and Marcus Lacy contributed nine and seven points, respectively.

East Buchanan received 17 points from Andrew Mead. Three other EB Bulldogs finished with 10 points.

Gallatin’s girls battled for four quarters only to come up short, 59-53. Gallatin held a 16-13 advantage after the opening period but East Buchanan took a 30-28 lead into halftime.

Sophomore Trisha Sprague paced Gallatin with 12 points. Senior Keira Story topped double figures with 10 points. Lindsey Robertson added nine points for Gallatin.

Next action for Bulldog teams comes next week in the Gallatin Invitational Tournament.
