Gary Redman, commander of Gallatin’s VFW Post #2172, and Pauline Redman, president of the Post’s Ladies Auxiliary and chairman of the “Voice of Democracy” and “Patriot’s Pen” program, are announcing the winners of the annual essay contests for seventh through twelfth grade students.

Nine through 12th grade students competed in the “Voice of Democracy” tape/essay program, with the patriotic theme of “My Commitment To America’s Future.” Gallatin sophomore Katie Patton, daughter of Steven and Alice Patton, placed first. Catherine Jones, Jameson, daughter of Susan Jones, placed second. Nicole Ray, Jameson, daughter of Ralph and Debbie Ray, placed third.

The theme for the seventh and eighth grade students submitting essays to the “Patriot’s Pen” contest was “My Dream For America.” Jameson students, Sarah Summerhays, daughter of Bart and Denise Summerhays, received first place. Brianna Weber, Jameson, daughter of Michael and Janellda Weber, received second. Johnna Stephen, Winston, daughter of Tom and Carmen Parkinson, received third.

Katie’s and Sarah’s essays will be forwarded for competition with the other District #1 essay winners. The District winners will continue to the State level of competition.

Other high school competitors were Colt Bohannon, Trisha Breit, Crystal Cook, Jamie Estes, Amber Merritt, Cody Morris, Megan Roberts, Megan Shaul; Bruce Sweet, Tyler Cox, Heath Deskins, Tabetha Heiber, Lauren Holcomb, Bryan Johnson, Jackie Lowery, Elizabeth Merritt, Jaclyn Ray, Rhiannon Riley, Nicholas Roberts, Michael Shaul, Byran Sweet and Michael Youngs, all of Jameson R-3; and Courtney Lang and Cassidy Pierce of Winston.

Post #2172 and the Ladies Auxiliary sponsored students in Gallatin, Jameson, Pattonsburg and Winston schools. Judges for both essay contests were Daren Adkins, Vicki Corwin, Jason Helton, Linda Steward and Darryl Wilkinson. The Post and Auxiliary members will have an awards ceremony and dinner for the winners and their parents/guardians, participating teachers and judges in March.
