Head Start children recently learned about community helpers with the assistance of nine professionals.

On Tuesday, Daviess County Sheriff Kevin Heldenbrand and Missouri Highway Patrolman Joe Johnston explained how law enforcement helps our community stay safe. They talked about other topics such as gun safety, seat belt safety, and stranger danger.

Jason Smith visited the classroom Wednesday and showed the students inside the ambulance and a lot of his medical equipment and how it worked.

Kelly Gray, a nurse from Cameron Regional Medical Center, explained her job and gave each child a medical mask, cap and boots, and explained that she must wear those in the surgical room.

Thursday, Daviess County Librarian Jan Johnson told about her job and explained how the children can use the library.

Tonya Thomas visited and told how she helps make the plastic trays used in frozen children’s meals found in grocery stores.

Highway Patrolman Sheldon Lyon from St. Joseph made Head Start children “Honorary Seat Belt Monitors” and reviewed other safety rules.

Friday, city employees Steve Ried and Chad Youngs showed the city utility truck, their various tools and exhibited how they can climb light poles.

Head Start appreciates everyone who made its theme of Community Helpers a reality. The children enjoyed each visitor in this busy week of learning.
