North Daviess Board of Education met Sept. 8
Superintendent Julie Kirby reported that family and community supporters have formed a Booster Club for the school during the regular meeting of the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education held Monday, Sept. 8.
The Booster Club will support academic, athletic and fine arts activities. Their first goals is to provide new basketball uniforms.
Mrs. Kirby said 12 families have signed up with the Booster Club so far and that officers have been elected. Officers are Elaine Bohannon, president; Ruth Lewis, secretary; Beverly Shaw, vice-president; and boy’s coach John Bruce, treasurer.
An unannounced bus inspection by the Missouri Highway Patrol took place on Aug. 26. All of the buses had one or more defects reported and one bus was taken out of service.
A reinspection was conducted on Sept. 10. One bus still had a problem with wiring to the crossing guard, according to Mrs. Kirby.
The board voted for Cecil McCrary, the school’s bus mechanic and bus driver, to perform a complete inspection of all buses biannually. Inspection should be completed by Aug. 5 and again by March 5 of each year. An inspection for each bus should be submitted with repairs completed and the form signed by the mechanic.
The financial statement was presented by Pat Heaps. Bills were paid as presented. Motion carried to allow Beverly Hunter to sign corrected payroll checks.
Ms. Kirby went over various overtime regulations concerning support personnel.
Ms. Kirby reported the elementary school and the high school made adequate yearly progress in communication arts and math. However, less students made an advanced or proficient score than in the previous year.
In response to a board request, Ms. Kirby presented a chart showing how much income would be generated by various increases in the levy. No levy increase is planned at this time.
A report on the reading improvement plans and after school tutoring had been prepared by Bobbie Pyles. Students attended a total of 925 hours of after school tutoring for improving reading skills. All students on a reading improvement plan made progress and none were retained. All special education students made AYP.
The district has no homeless, migrant or limited English proficient students at this time. Measures are in place to address any student who might enroll and qualify for these services.
The board covered guidelines regarding prayer and religious activities and the school program as published by the United States Department of Education.
The board agreed to contract with Claim Care to obtain reimbursement for speech and occupational therapy sessions; and to contract with Traci Kadolph for speech therapy at the rate of $50/hour.
The board approved a motion to endorse the assurances statement for services under Part B of IDEA.
The auditor’s report was accepted by the board.
During administrative Reports, Ms. Steinman reported that reading turtoring will be available again this year. Students who scored advanced or proficient on the MAP will be going to Worlds of Fun. The school will participate in McTeachers night at McDonald’s in Bethany. McDonald’s will donate 20% of the evening’s sales to the school.
Mr. Willhite also reported high school students scored well on the MAP and will attend Worlds of Fun. There are only six students this year. The girls’ softball team will not be able to play in the district contest because they have not played in enough games to qualify due to an injury suffered by Melissa Youngs after an automobile accident.
Ms. Kirby reported a total enrollment of 109
The board went into executive session. After returning to open session, the board agreed to hire Nichole Lewis as preschool aide for 16 hours per week.
Next meeting was set for 6:30 on Monday, Oct. 13, in the high school conference room.
