“Relay for Life 500: Racing for a Cause” kicks off with a dinner for cancer survivors at noon on Saturday, Sept. 6
In just a few weeks the Daviess County Relay For Life event will unfold around the Gallatin business square. We would like to see more participation than ever before — and we want to raise the bar even further for the amount of money collected for cancer research.
This year’s event is being called the “Relay for Life 500: Racing for a Cause.” The slate of events kicks off with a dinner for cancer survivors at noon on Saturday, Sept. 6. A variety of activities follow until the conclusion at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7. In just a few hours last year, this even raised over $14,600 — right here in our own community!
The cause is a worthy and important one. Nearly everyone has been touched by cancer in some way. Activities begin with a Survivor’s Walk where cancer survivors take laps around the business square. And in a further show of the effect cancer has on our society, at dusk the event includes a luminary ceremony where hundreds of candles are lit in honor of those with cancer and in memory of those who lost their lives to the disease.
But the Relay for Life is more than a simple everyday fundraiser. It is an opportunity for people who have been affected by cancer to share their burden with others who have experienced the same thing. Those who lost grandparents or parents to cancer can find others who suffered in the same way. Those whose spouses, siblings, children, friends of other loved ones succumbed can also find kindred spirits at the Relay for Life.
And in the end, the Relay for Life is about survival and hope. It is a visible demonstration that cancer may debilitate, it may cause death, but it also can be beaten.
Every dollar raised in the Relay for Life goes to make it easier for people to fight cancer now and in the future.
People throughout Daviess County have shown time and again a generosity when it comes to worthy causes. We can think of few causes that are more worthwhile than continuing the fight against cancer. That’s why the Daviess County Relay for Life is a growing event, one of that helps unify us into a caring community.
Last year’s Daviess County Relay for Life involved 250 to 300 people with 14 teams organized to participate in events. People of all ages are welcome to swell the ranks of in the fight against cancer. It’s easy to participate. Teams organize so that team members keep moving around the square throughout the entire night. There remain time slots yet to be filled, and there is always room for additional teams.
