Graveside services for Daniel G. Gates were held at 2:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Pilot Grove No. 1 Cemetery, Gilman City. Arrangements were by the Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany. Memorials may be made to Pilot Grove No. 1 Cemetery.

Daniel George Gates, 92, Jamesport, died Aug. 2, 2003, at a Bethany nursing home.

Mr. Gates was born Feb. 23, 1911, to George and Lourea R. (Osborn) Gates. His mother passed away when Danny was two days old. His father later married Lola Zelma Meek, whom Danny considered his mother.

Mr. Gates was a farmer in the Jamesport area until retiring. He owned and operated the first automatic twine-tie hay baler west of the Mississippi and did custom baling for several. He also worked part time for MFA.

He served as deacon at the Pilot Grove No. 1 Church, Gilman City, and the First Baptist Church of Bethany.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Effie; three sons, James of Jamesport, George of Bethany, and Richard of Hilton Head, S.C.; two brothers, Ivan of Gilman City and Francis of Independence; a sister, Esther Miller of Pleasant Valley; six grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren.
