Peter Hofherr, deputy director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture, will give the commencement address at Gallatin High School. The graduation ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m. on May 18.

Hofherr will challenge the graduating seniors to take full advantage of life’s opportunities and responsibilities.

“I might also put in a plug encouraging students to seek careers in agriculture,” Hofherr said.

“I’ve found that path to be highly rewarding, and I’m delighted to share some of my thoughts and experiences with the Gallatin Class of 2003.”

Gov. Bob Holden named Hofherr deputy director of the state agriculture department in February 2001. As deputy, he helps manage the department’s six divisions and direct department policy.

Prior to joining the department, Hofherr was involved with his family business, St. James Winery, one of Missouri’s oldest wineries. He also worked as a manager for Coopers and Lybrand, a Big Six accounting and consulting firm in Atlanta, where he served as a consultant for industry mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations. Hofherr also worked as a consultant on mergers and acquisitions for the Atlanta consulting firm BDO Seidman.

A chartered financial analyst, Hofherr holds a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Auburn University and a master’s in business administration from Geogia State University. He also studied international banking and finance at the University of London.

Hofherr is a member of the Association for Management and Research, the Institute for Chartered Financial Analysts and the Phelps County Regional Health Care Foundation. He is a former member of the American Society of Enology and Viticulture and the Missouri Grape Growers Association, and has served on the Missouri Restaurant Association and the Missouri Grape and Wine Advisory boards. He also has served as a commissioner on the Missouri Soil and Water Conservation Districts Commission.

A native of St. James, Hofherr enjoys reading, traveling, wine tasting and promoting Missouri agriculture. Hofherr is married to Beth Reeds Hofherr. He has two children, Brandon and Finlay.
