The first week kill totals for the 2003 Spring Turkey Season reveal an increase in birds taken by hunters in Daviess County.

Daviess County ranks second in the Northwest reporting region, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. A total of 279 turkeys were checked in at local checkpoints, including 221 adults and 58 juveniles. This is an increase of 44 turkeys compared to first week totals of last year.

Carroll County led the region with 351 turkeys. Caldwell County was third behind Daviess County with 276 birds. Other counties surrounding Daviess County reported the following: DeKalb 251, Gentry 171, Grundy 220, Harrison 259, and Livingston 214.

Overall, the Northwest region reported an increase of 422 turkeys compared to last year’s first week total. So far there have been 3,104 adults and 902 juveniles birds reported for a kill total of 4,006.

Statewide the turkey harvest is also on the increase. The 28,991 total for Missouri is an increase of 1,048 birds compared to last year. This, however, is down from the record year of 2000 when a harvest of 30,440 was reported. Top reporting counties statewide are Texas County 690, Laclede County 620, and Howell County 604.

There have been two non-fatal hunting accidents reported statewide and no fatalities thus far in the spring season.
