Versatility. When Gallatin R-5 senior Roxi Davitt signed a letter of intent last Wednesday to play basketball next season for the William Jewell Lady Cardinals, the same word kept popping up over and over again in separate conversations with her old coach, Rick Lin, and her new coach, Jill Cress.

Davitt, who recently finished her senior season as the #2 all-time Lady Bulldog scorer with 1,428 points, leaves a GHS program that won 79 games in the last four years.

“Roxi is a great kid and an outstanding student,” said Coach Cress, who led the Lady Cardinals to a Heart of America Athletic Conference title and second straight appearance in the NAIA Division II national tournament.

“She is an incredible player,” she added, “one that is equally effective playing outside and inside. We think she will fit in really well with what we like to do.”

William Jewell’s women took the HAAC crown with an 18-2 mark and finished the season 27-9 and ranked 11th nationally after bowing out of the national tournament in the second round. A fast break style is the trademark of the Lady Cardinal game. The WJC women averaged 72 points per game and around 25 three-point shots per contest. The Lady Cardinals finished fourth in the nation in field goal percentage.

“We play an up-tempo style and we think Roxi will bring a lot to our game with her ability to play inside, run the floor and shoot the outside shot,” Coach Cress remarked. “We’re just very happy to have her on board,” she added.

Coach Cress has signed three transfer guards, including a junior college all-American. The Lady Cardinals graduate three All-HAAC seniors. Two received All-American honors this past season.

“It’s been really nice having someone so versatile for four years,” said GHS head girls coach Rick Lin of his former star player. “It will be hard to replace her because she can do so many things,” he added. “Her leadership will be missed because she has shown other players that when you work hard in the off-season, great things will happen for you.”

GHS basketball records are sketchy, but Davitt ranks at or near the top in several categories for the 2002-2003 season and her career: single game points (33, twice), single season points (497), single season free throws (135) and career free throws (335). In addition to career scoring, she also ranks in the all-time GHS top five in career three-pointers made and rebounds.
