When one of the Daviess County spellers asked for the definition of the word ‘delirious,” the caller answered, “That’s what you’ll be when this is over.”

Catherine A. Jones, eighth grader from North Daviess R-3, was no doubt ‘delirious with joy’ after holding out against 38 other competitors to receive first place in the Daviess County Spelling Bee held Thursday, Feb. 20, at Tri-County R-7. Catherine spelled adagio and posse correctly to win the competition

‘Raving incoherently’ is another definition of the word delirious. That may have been the state of some of the young spellers as they tackled tongue-trippers and mind-bogglers like busby, molecular, surly, pavilion, guru, dilated, astrologer, desperado and alabaster.

Jared Rhodes, eighth grader from Tri-County R-7, managed to keep his sanity as he took second place, as did Shatara Prescott, seventh grader from Tri-County R-7, who will serve as alternate.

Catherine is the daughter of Susan Buell-Jones of Jameson. Jared is the son of Fred Rhodes of Jamesport. Shatara is the daughter of Jack and Melody Prescott of Jamesport.

Zac Bradley, eighth grader from Gallatin R-5, the son of Mike Bradley of Gallatin and Carla Bradley of Sumner, will act as second alternate.

Thirty-eight students from the five regional school attended the Spelling Bee. All received participant certificates.

Toni Cox of Tri-County R-7 was the County Bee director of the Northwest Regional Spelling Bee. Caller was Bruce Williams of R-7. Tim Bland of Winston R-7, Kim Brammer of Gallatin R-5 and Amanda Vessar of Pattonsburg R-2 served as judges. Greg Hartley of North Daviess R-3 drew the words.
