City Administrator/Clerk Kathy Arnold, 43, died Monday night just before the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Gallatin Board of Aldermen. Apparently she was the victim of an aneurism.
Ms. Arnold was discovered slumped over while sitting in her vehicle parked in front of city hall with the door slightly ajar as the aldermen gathered for Monday’s board meeting. Response to the emergency was immediate but her vital signs ended while the ambulance was en route to the hospital.
Ms. Arnold had complained about pain in her neck and chest a few months ago but dismissed concern after medical tests showed nothing and the pain subsided. Mayor Davis talked with Kathy just hours before Monday’s board meeting and there was no hint that she was ailing. Monday’s public meeting was postponed because of the incident, rescheduled to Thursday evening.
“This is a tremendous loss to the City of Gallatin,” says Mayor Davis. “Kathy became a new resident here within the past year and was very much in love with the city and the people here. She was devoted to making Gallatin a better place to live and work. Kathy maintained a positive mental attitude regardless of the circumstances. The board and city employees respected her. She will be missed by all. She was an awfully young mother to leave a family behind. Our prayers go out to her family.”
Kathy Arnold would have completed her first year as Gallatin’s city administrator/clerk on Jan. 16. She came to Gallatin after working at Milan.
Mrs. Arnold took over as Gallatin’s city administrator after the resignation of Jason Helton. Mrs. Arnold came to Gallatin with about 20 years of experience in municipal budgeting, personnel, policies and reports. She had served on the Green Hills board.
Mrs. Arnold was city administrator for Milan from 1997 to October of 2001. Before that she was Milan’s city clerk from 1984 to 1997. She was secretary/assistant utility collector for Milan from 1978 to 1983.
Mrs. Arnold graduated from Milan C-2 in 1978 and continued her education at Kirksville Area Vocational where she received certificates in Accounting I, II and III. She had also taken a data processing class at Truman State and a word processing class at North Central Missouri College.
City hall will be closed Friday for the funeral service to be held at Schoene-Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan. A complete obituary appears in the Obituaries section of this site.
