A year ago, Americans prepared to enter a new year not knowing what to expect. We had just suffered through the worst terrorist attack in history. New York’s financial district was still smoldering as every American came together to help their fellow countrymen. There appeared to be little reason to celebrate during a traditionally festive time of year. But we had much to celebrate and even more reasons to be hopeful.

American troops made significant progress in Afghanistan. After routing the Taliban and destroying terrorist camps across the country, we helped build a more democratic regime and helped restore moral leadership chosen by the people of Afghanistan. It truly was the season of giving as our men and women of our armed forces gave freedom to the people of Afghanistan. By late January, Afghanistan was not only no longer a terrorist state, but also an ally of America and an ally of freedom. At home, Americans continued to celebrate our freedom that had not been stripped from us by the terrorists.

A year has passed, and millions of Americans are once again gathering with their families to celebrate the holidays. Once again, America is faced with a threat to our security-this time from a brutal dictator in Iraq. And like Afghanistan, we will only be more secure when the people of Iraq are liberated from a ruthless tyrant.

Last week, we learned that Iraq’s weapons report contained what Secretary of State Colin Powell called, “a catalogue of recycled information and flagrant omissions.” The world has given Iraq every conceivable chance to comply with resolutions Iraq has agreed to. Time and time again, Iraq has promised to comply with these United Nations resolutions. Time and time again, Iraq has violated the trust of the international community. Only this time, the free world has promised severe consequences if Iraq continues to deceive and mislead the international community.

Thousands of Americans soldiers now find themselves a half a world away, preparing for a possible conflict with Iraq. As we look forward to exchanging gifts with our families, we have already been assured the gift of security from the brave men and women in uniform. This gift has come at a heavy cost of millions of American soldiers and the suffering of their loved ones. I am reminded that while we did not choose this war, each American serving our country in the military chose their duty, and they did so with pride, honor and love of country.

So when we celebrate the holidays this year, I am truly thankful for the sacrifices of our military. Just as we did last year, we have plenty to celebrate in America, because our freedom is always something to celebrate. Just ask the people of Afghanistan. And what about hope? Hope always springs eternal when you live in America. That well will never run dry as long as we remain free. To all of my friends and neighbors in the Sixth District, have a happy holiday season.
