The United States Postal Service is ready to make the holidays magical with smiling “Snowmen Stamps” and a variety of helpful services.

Cards and letters should be mailed by Dec. 17 to make their holiday destinations and packages by Dec. 14.

Military mail should be sent by Express Mail or other expedited service after the Dec. 11 mailing deadline to insure that it arrives in time for Christmas.

To make sure your packages make it under the tree, the post office offers these tips:

*Don’t use masking tape; instead use clear sealing package tape.

*Use clean boxes without other printing or addresses on them.

*Place your return address and complete mailing address and zip code on both the outside and the inside of your package.

*Carefully pack glass and fragile items with newspaper or packing material to avoid damage due to shock.

*When mailing framed photographs, take the glass out of the frame and wrap it separately.

Twenty billion pieces of mail will keep postal employees busy this holiday season. The busiest day of the year is expected on Monday, Dec. 16, when Americans will mail over 280 million cards and letters.

To meet the needs of its customers, the postal service will fly 40 additional airplanes, increase hundreds of truck and rail connections and put 55 million additional mail sacks and trays into service.

This Christmas holiday season, customers may choose from stamps that include the traditional Madonna and Child and the smiling Snowmen stamp. Other stamps such as the Jewish Hanukkah stamp, the EID Islamic Festival or the Kwanza African-American cultural stamp add color and diversity to holiday celebrations.

At the Gallatin Post Office, postal clerks are ready to help mailers with hassle-free, friendly service and postal carriers are working hard to deliver mail to all customers on schedule.

As the magic of the season unfolds, the United States Postal Service is wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday!

The Gallatin Post Office is open 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday though Friday, and 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Customers may call the postal answer line at 1-800-275-8777 or log-on to the USPS web site for help with stamp purchases or mailing rates and zip-codes.
