Rains Natural Meats reports processing 27 deer through the “Share the Harvest” program. The program provides venison donated from area hunters to needy families at no cost. This is the third year that Rains Natural Meats has been the processing center for the program.
Marie Toney, director of the Daviess County Green Hills Community Action Agency, said distribution of the surplus venison will begin today (Wednesday) at the Seventh-day Adventist Community Service Center.
“We’re expecting about 90 families to come through,” said Mrs. Toney.
Rita Rains said 1,566 pounds of quality venison has been processed. There was enough money left to process one more deer.
“Deer season isn’t over,” said Mrs. Toney. The Green Hills Community Action Agency will continue to accept donations. Call Marie at 660-663-3211.
Deer hunters still have the statewide muzzleloading (Dec. 7-15) and anterless (Dec. 19-22 for Units one to 27) and archery (open through Jan. 15) deer season to fill their tags.
