Members attending the National FFA Convention’s fourth session October 30-Nov. 2 in Louisville, Ken., saw the Gallatin FFA Chapter recognized as a National Two Star Chapter. Only the top five percent of chapters nationwide receive this recognition.
Chapter officers Brook Carder and Amanda Bohannon accepted the award for the local group. Twenty-three members attended the national event which had an all-time record with 51,025 members and guests present.
Trent Dowell, Ida Jarboe, Kenny Youtsey, Wesley Gay, Randy Eaton and Kara Sullenger of Gallatin R-5 and Leslie Mason of Pattonsburg R-2 received the American FFA Degree at the 10thsession of the convention on Nov. 2. This honor goes to less than three percent of members nationwide.
The American FFA Degree recognizes demonstrated leadership ability and outstanding achievements in agricultural business, production, processing or service programs. To be eligible, members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program in which they start, own, or hold a professional position in an existing agriculture enterprise. Recipients must also make it their mission to demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement.
Each award recipient received a gold American FFA Degree key, certificate and an ID card. The degree recognition program is sponsored by BASF, Case IH, The Farm Credit System and Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.
Members heard motivational speeches and participated in leadership programs, the National Career Show and other events.
Katrina Calhoun, Jessica King, Mariah Gibson, and Rachel Peery attended the convention as members of the National FFA choir. They performed in front of as many as 15,000 people.
Chapter advisors Chris Henderson and Dennis Croy accompanied the chapter on its trip.
Students from the Gallatin FFA Chapter served in the National FFA Courtesy Corps at the convention. They viewed this year’s convention from the other side backstage, in the newsroom, at competitive events and as hosts throughout the convention center playing a crucial role in event logistics.
“Participants in the National FFA Courtesy Corps provide valuable services for the overall convention operation,” said National FFA Advisor Dr. Larry D. Case. “FFA gains a tremendous resource, and the participants gain wonderful volunteer experience and an insight into the planning and logistics necessary to ensure a safe and successful convention. They are essential to our ability to deliver a premier leadership and educational event for nearly 47,000 guests.
