A Certificate of Merit was received recently by VFW Post #2172 from the Missouri Military Funeral Honors Program, State of Missouri. The post was recognized for rendering Military Honors for Honorable Discharged Veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States for the

period of July 1, 2001-June 30, 2002.

Jack Mooney is holding the certificate as a representative of the 65 members in the VFW Post #2172. Mr. Mooney says membership is up from previous years, but the post still suffers from a lack of younger members. Arland Haynes is the oldest member of the group, at age 90.

This is the third year for the local Military Honors program. Fortunately they have not had a funeral to attend in the past six months.

“That’s the longest period for us to not have a funeral,” said Mr. Mooney. Military Honors performed by VFW Post #2172 are available within Daviess County to those who request one through the funeral director. The State of Missouri through the National Guard will also perform the Military Honors, but usually only sends three or four to participate.

“We try to have at least 14 present to render the honors,” said Mr. Mooney, “We usually send even shooters, Commander Gary Redman, Chaplain Arland Haynes, a color guard of four, an Officer of the Day, and live taps.”

The post is hoping to recruit new members as veterans of the Korean War who served 60 days from 1949 until the present have recently become eligible.

Prospective members are invited by VFW Post #2172 and American Legion Post #68 to attend the Veterans Breakfast at 7 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, at Joni’s Restaurant in Gallatin.

The Certificate reads: On behalf of a grateful nation and the State of Missouri for your patriotic support of the Missouri Military Funeral Honors Program. Your organization provided military

funeral honors for deceased American veterans during the twelve-month period ending June 30, 2002. Your dedicated support ensured that veterans were laid to rest with the dignity and honor they deserve.” The certificate was signed by B. Wayne Medley, Colonel (AUS, Retired) Director.
