Members of the North Daviess R-3 Board of Education heard good news and bad news for the school’s finances during their regular meeting held Monday, Oct. 14.
The good news came when Superintendent Julie Kirby reported that North Daviess will receive $12,000 from the Rural Schools Grant. The board voted to allow electronic transfer of the funds.
Ms. Kirby also reported the bad news — state tax receipts are 3% lower than expected for this quarter. She told the board that at the last superintendent’s meeting she attended, school districts were being advised to plan for lower state revenues by June 2003.
The administration suggested a committee be appointed to look at cost savings plans for the district. The board offered suggestions of membership for the budget committee and Ms. Kirby will begin inviting those people to join this effort.
Ms. Kirby presented a draft of the Annual Performance Report for North Daviess R-3. The district gained seven points over last year’s rating. Gains were made in the number of students enrolled in vocational courses.
Linda Sarver presented an evaluation report on the district’s curriculum. The district received all available MSIP points for curriculum and exceeded the requirements in all areas. The emphasis this year will be a revision of math and science.
Ms. Kirby presented a report on reading scores for the third and seventh grades. The scores are derived from the Missouri Assessment Program. Ninety percent of seventh graders and 86.4% of third graders scored satisfactory or above on the state scale.
Financial statement was reported by Pat Heaps. Bills were paid as presented.
Darcie Iddings, Amanda Williams and Max Courter presented a request for the seniors to take a trip to Hawaii on May 1-9, 2003.
The board agreed to approve the trip after the following conditions have been met: a statement of funds available; signed consent forms from parents allowing the students to fly to Hawaii; and parent’s agreement to pay for a portion of the trip if a student has not earned enough money to fund the whole trip.
Ms. Kirby will approve paying the deposit if the above items are taken care of by the senior sponsor. The class sponsor will attend the next regular board meeting to show the conditions have been met.
The board accepted a bid from Scott Stephens for the 2003 audit.
Oct. 26 will be work day at the school. The Jameson Community Betterment Club has planned to erect flag poles at the softball field, paint the backstop fence, and paint the trim on the snack shack. All are welcome to join in making these improvements.
During administrative reports, Mrs. Steinman gave a report on MAP rewards Worlds of Fun day; field trip to Living History Festival in Lathrop; Reach Out America; fifth and sixth grade academic team; Stanford testing; and flu shot clinic held Oct. 21.
Mr. Willhite reported on high school MAP rewards Worlds of Fun day; and Lady Knights playing in sectionals at Ridgeway Oct. 16.
After returning from executive session, the board voted to transfer the district legal records for M.U.S.I.C. to Doster and James, LLC.
The next regular meeting of the R-3 Board of Education was set for 6:30 on Monday, Nov. 18, in the high school conference room in Jameson.
