Gallatin’s Lady Bulldogs wrapped up a 6-games-in-6-days softball marathon Tuesday with a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Maysville in a pivotal Grand River Conference clash for both schools. With the victory, the Lady Wolverines locked up a share of the conference title with a final 6-2 record. The Lady Bulldogs, previous winners of 5 straight league games, fell to 5-3. South Harrison, by virtue of Tuesday’s 5-3 win over Worth County, shares the league crown with Maysville. Princeton shares 2nd place with Gallatin.
Maysville scored both runs, one in the 1st inning and another in the 3rd, on errors. Gallatin batters failed to solve Lady Wolverine hurler Ashley Ebersold, and pushed across a single run in the 5th inning when Lindsey Love tripled and scored on a sac fly by Cori Nichols. The Lady Bulldogs pulled together in the 6th inning when starting pitcher Roxi Davitt left the game after fouling off a pitch into her eye. A later xray showed no fracture. Lindsey Robertson took over on the mound and shut out Maysville over the last 2 frames.
“I’m obviously disappointed,” GHS softball coach Christy Prather said after the game, “but I can’t be too disappointed,” she added. “Nobody ever expected us to be fighting for first place. To be in the hunt and have that opportunity makes he very proud of the girls.”
By the time 5:30 p.m. rolled around Saturday, Lady Bulldog softballers were feeling pretty tired…but not too tired to accept what is believed to be the their first ever tournament championship trophy for the GHS girls softball program. Gallatin finished with a 2-1 record to capture the championship of the inaugural Hamilton Tournament, despite suffering a final game loss to LeBlond by an 11-1 margin. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Hamilton on the day, 5-4, and beat North Platte, 8-3, in what turned out to be the deciding contest. North Platte also finished 2-1 for the tourney but Gallatin earned the trophy with the head-to-head decision.
Gallatin’s junior varsity teamed split a pair of games, beating Hamilton, 14-4, and losing to North Platte, 6-5.
The Lady Bulldogs made up a 4-0 deficit in their opener against the Lady Hornets, scoring 3 runs in the 6th inning and 2 in the 7th. Davitt walked, Love singled, Nichols doubled, Amanda Bohannon reached on an error and Carder singled in the 6th. Robertson and Davitt singled in the 7th to set the table for Parker, who drove home both with a triple.
A 5-run 4th inning propelled Gallatin to its win over North Platte. Five straight Lady Bulldogs reached base Carder, Parker, Ward, Robertson and Davitt. Three GHS runs in the 1st inning came by way of Parker’s lead off triple, walks to Ward and Robertson, a 2-out single by Kayli Burrell and a single by Nichols.
Gallatin’s only run against LeBlond came late in the game when Kami Burrell delivered a home run down the right field line.
Monday’s non-conference matchup saw East Buchanan claim a 10-2 victory. Both Gallatin runs crossed the plate in the 3rd inning when Nichols, Kami Burrell and Parker all singled. Parker’s 6th inning single was the only hit by the Lady Bulldogs the rest of the way.
The Lady Bulldogs came from behind to beat King City, 7-5, last Thursday for their 5th consecutive GRC victory. Love started a 5- run 6th inning rally with a one-out single, and moved all the way to 3rd when the Wildkat catcher overthrew 1st after Kayli Burrell laid down a bunt. Nichols popped to 2nd base but the fielder dropped the ball as she glanced toward 3rd. Love scored on the error. Carder followed with a 2-run single. Parker hammered an rbi- triple over the centerfielder’s head. She then forced a pickoff throw and scored when the third baseman dropped the ball.
Gallatin closes the book on the regular season Thursday at Jamesport.
