Captain Johnnie B. Hoggatt, Commanding Officer of Troop H in St. Joseph, announces information about a new and potentially expensive scam.

The scam starts with Emails, phone calls, or web pages telling you to call an “809” phone number. If the person calls this number, they will be billed $2,400 dollars on their next phone bill. Since there are so many different area codes today, persons will unknowingly call the number back and be charged $2,400 per minute.

The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin Islands. The 809 area code can be used as a “pay-per-call” number, similar to the 900 numbers in the United States. Since the 809 area code is not in the United States, it is not covered by U. S. regulations, which require warnings of rates and charges when a call is made.

Captain Johnnie Hoggatt said, “Do not ever call the 809 area code and please tell your friends to become aware of this scam.”
