There were a lot of firsts at the Winston Speedway Saturday night. Two drivers won the first feature races in their careers and another driver won for the first time since driving a charger car and a point champion of a season ago won for the first time this season. The fifth driver in the winner’s circle was there for the 13th time.

Gary Donaldson of Liberty and Don Stark of Mt. Ayr, Iowa started on the pole and led every lap to claim the factory stock feature and the Davis Wholesale Floor Covering B Modified feature. It marked the first wins in their racing careers. There were 21 cars in the B modified field and 19 factory stocks.

Cletus Murray of Holt, 17-year-old Eric Joy of Cowgill, and Terry Waterbury of Coffey won the heat races in the factory stock division while Hugh Eddy of Milan, his son Jeff Eddy of Milan, and Denny Albertson of Chillicothe took the heats in the B modified division.

Eddie Schwope III of St. Joseph charged from fifth to the front and held off Eddie Schwope, Jr., to win for the first time while driving in the charger class. Hopkins and Burns, who are 1-2 in the point chase, took the heats.

Last year’s point champ Jack Stotts started in the “lucky 7” spot and held off a fast-charging Dean Wray of Trenton, the current point leader, to win his first Woody’s Dodge Jeep Chrysler A modified feature of the season. Wray and Terry VanTrump of Richmond grabbed the heat races.

Mike Ryun of Kansas City ran first and won for the 13th time this season in the super stock class and Vic Austin of Kearney was second. Each driver also won his heat race. Ryun trails Austin by two points with one point race remaining.

B modified point leader Steven Klinger of Browning hit the wall and flipped in the feature. The car was heavily damaged, but Klinger was only shaken up.

This Saturday will mark a special salute to 9-11 and all emergency personnel, law enforcement, hospital and fire and ambulance persons will be admitted free with proper identification or in their uniform. A special pre-race ceremony is planned around 7:15 p.m.
